Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IF I HAVE TO MISS A CLASS?
Your teacher will email a class summary to the entire class each week so you’ll always know what’s going on even if you missed a class.
We are also happy to setup a one-on-one makeup lesson at the super discounted rate of $45/hour (rather than the regular rate of $80/hour for private lessons).
WHAT ARE YOUR REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICIES?
All class transfer and cancellation requests must be made at least 7 days prior to your class start date. After this date, refunds cannot be given under any circumstance and we cannot transfer you to another class free of charge. The only exception is for incorrect level placement and your teacher’s approval will be requested in order to make a level transfer once a class has begun. We will work with you to find a suitable alternative if a class in your correct level is not available!
When you schedule a private or a makeup lesson with us, our teacher is reserving his or her time, which can often mean giving up other gigs or lessons to work with you. To be fair to our team, we compensate teachers for all lessons cancelled on short notice even if the lesson does not happen. Thus, our cancellation policy for private lessons is the following: 24-hour notice is required for cancellation of any Monday-Friday lessons. 48-hour notice is required for Saturday and Sunday cancellations. Otherwise, you will still be charged for the lesson. If you are currently in a package, the hours for the scheduled lesson will be deducted.
HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE IN EACH CLASS?
We cap all classes at 15 students maximum. Most classes are more intimate than that, averaging 10 students.
WHO TEACHES THE CLASSES?
All our teachers have gone through a rigorous hiring process to demonstrate that they live up to our expectations: knowledgeable, approachable and energetic professors leading every class!
Our beginner classes are usually taught by non-native speakers. These teachers are often Americans who learned the language themselves and therefore can empathize with the initial challenges of starting to learn a language.
All our level 4 and above classes are taught by native speakers.
Learn more about our teachers on our teach page.
ARE THE CLASSES IMMERSIVE?
Our Level 1 classes are taught in English to not overwhelm you while you get your bearings with the language. However, teachers will maximize all opportunities for conversation practice even in a Level 1 class.
For romance languages, the second class of Level 2 will start to warm you up to speaking mainly in the target language. Our classes taught with different alphabets (Hebrew, Arabic, Russian, Japanese, Chinese) will use a bit more English in the earlier levels. Either way, your teacher will make sure you are comfortable and challenging yourself just enough to learn without getting frustrated or overwhelmed.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A TYPICAL CLASS?
We maximize speaking time in class as much as possible, so all writing and reading practice will be assigned as homework.
The first 10-15 minutes are typically focused on review of any previous material and homework. Next, new vocabulary and grammar topics will be introduced. The bulk of the class will then be spent on fun, interactive, conversational activities that give you the chance to practice new topics.
HOW CAN I ASSESS MY LEVEL?
Use the level descriptions on our website to help place yourself. If you start a class and realize that you are in the wrong level, we will help transfer you to a different class at no charge.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
All you need is a pen, paper and the textbook required for your level. Your confirmation email will include information about the books required.
